RARE and OBSCURE

VA - Rare and Obscure 70s (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

Rare and obscure music tracks are songs that, despite their artistic merit, never gained widespread recognition or commercial success. These tracks often come from lesser-known artists, underground scenes, or forgotten albums that were released in limited quantities. They can span various genres, but all are Lost to Time. Some artists disappeared after one album or single, leaving behind hidden gems others have gained cult status gaining appreciation years later through collectors and music enthusiasts and many were impacted by limited releases only being pressed in small batches or only available in certain regions.

"Rare and Obscure 70s" is a collection that ventures beyond mainstream nostalgia to explore the forgotten sonic gems of a decade filled with innovation and artistic freedom. Spanning four distinct track lists, Rock, Folk, Pop, and Soul each presenting 32 tracks, unearths the overlooked brilliance of musicians who, despite their talent, never fully reached commercial heights. It is a celebration of creativity unfettered by industry trends, shining a light on music that remains timeless despite its obscurity.

CD1, The Rock Track list encapsulates the raw energy of the 70s underground scene, embracing heavy riffs, progressive compositions, and psychedelic landscapes. These tracks reflect the era’s spirit of rebellion, where musicians crafted intricate soundscapes driven by passion rather than mainstream approval. From blistering guitar work to experimental structures, this segment is a deep dive into the unfiltered essence of rock’s most adventurous period.

CD2, The Folk Track list is a tribute to introspective storytelling and melodic craftsmanship, capturing a range of acoustic textures and poetic lyricism. These tracks embody a warmth and sincerity that remains unparalleled, drawing from tradition while embracing the fresh perspectives of an era in cultural flux. The selection here is rich with evocative melodies and timeless narratives, offering a glimpse into the quieter yet profoundly moving corners of 70s music.

CD3, The Pop Track list challenges the notion that commercial success defines musical greatness. It features melodies and songcraft that, despite their brilliance, slipped through the cracks of widespread recognition. From dreamy harmonies and radio-friendly hooks to boundary-pushing experimentation, this section revives the vibrant and diverse spirit of pop music beyond the mainstream hits of the decade.

CD4, The Soul Track list embodies the heart and groove of the 70s, highlighting powerful vocal performances and deep emotional resonance. These songs evoke themes of love, struggle, and celebration, carried by rich instrumentation and undeniable rhythm. Whether smooth and sultry or raw and impassioned, this collection captures the essence of soul music at its most heartfelt and enduring.

Ultimately, Rare and Obscure 70s is a rediscovery, a tribute to artistry that deserves to be heard and appreciated. These artists, while not as widely known as some of the era’s headliners, have come to be celebrated as rare gems for the way they capture the spirit and innovation of 1970s. By bringing together these hidden tracks, the set challenges listeners to explore beyond the familiar and embrace the beauty found in the overlooked corners of musical history. This is a deep dive into forgotten sounds. Each song in this collection reflects the daring essence of 70s energy (B)

While every effort was made to include only tracks from the 1970s, a few slipped in from just before the decade—but they still embody the spirit and sound of the ’70s.”

PUB ROCK

VA - Time! Gentlemen! Pub Rock Rhythm 'n' Groove, Classic Cuts and Rarities 1974-1982 [2025] (3 x CDs)

Pub Rock wasn’t just another chapter in British rock history—it was a movement born out of frustration, rejecting the indulgence of stadium-sized rock in favor of something rawer, sweatier, and more immediate. The smoky backrooms of London pubs became the proving ground for bands that fused rock, R&B, and a touch of country swagger into something entirely their own. Time! Gentlemen! Pub Rock Rhythm 'n' Groove, Classic Cuts and Rarities 1974-1982 is a love letter to that era, a mammoth three-CD set that resurrects both the defining anthems and the forgotten gems of Pub Rock’s heyday.

The set embraces the rugged, blues-infused energy of Dr. Feelgood, the pub-circuit harmonies of Brinsley Schwarz, and the stripped-down soulfulness of Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers. Yet what truly elevates this collection are its rarities—tracks that haven’t been heard in decades, some of them appearing on CD for the very first time. Roogalator’s “Cincinnati Fatback”, a groove-heavy number from their 1977 album, oozes funk-inflected rhythm, proving how Pub Rock flirted with a variety of sounds beyond traditional rock. Live Wire’s “Lone Car Cruising”, a demo from the Honky Tonk Demos, is a brilliant time capsule, giving a glimpse into the grassroots ethos of the genre.

There’s something wonderfully chaotic about The Wilko Johnson and Lew Lewis Band’s “Caravan Man”, originally appearing on an EP, with its raucous, punchy energy; exactly the kind of tune you’d expect to hear on a beer-soaked pub stage. Motor Boys Motor’s “Drive Friendly”, another long-lost single version, carries a swaggering intensity that set the stage for the harder-edged sounds of later punk rock. Chilli Willi’s “Jungle Song”, a demo, captures a moment of Pub Rock experimentation, reinforcing how this was never a genre defined by one sound, but rather an attitude: fierce, unfussy, and always ready for another round.

Tim Turan’s remastering breathes life into these tracks, allowing every riff and rhythm to land with the same force they did when they first rattled the walls of packed pubs. Simon Matthews’ accompanying booklet offers an insightful account of Pub Rock’s role in the British music scene, tracking its influence from grassroots grooves to punk’s explosive arrival.

For lovers of bluesy rock, rollicking R&B, and British soulfulness, Time! Gentlemen! isn’t just nostalgia it’s an invitation to rediscover an era that thrived on rebellion, rhythm, and the pure joy of live music. (B)

Bobby Sherman- The Very Best of Bobby Sherman [2000] BOBBY SHERMAN R.I.P.

BOBBY SHERMAN R.I.P.

Bobby Sherman- The Very Best of Bobby Sherman [2000]

Robert Cabot Sherman Jr. (July 22, 1943 – June 24, 2025) was an American singer and actor who was a teen idol in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He had a series of successful singles, notably the million-seller "Little Woman" (1969). Sherman left show business in the 1970s for a career as a paramedic and a deputy sheriff but performed occasionally into the 1990s. (Wikipedia)

Bobby Sherman wasn’t just a pop star, he was a beacon of warmth, decency, and genuine charm in an era that often prized flash over feeling. For a stretch of time in the late 1960s and early ’70s, his boyish smile, gentle voice, and breezy melodies captured the hearts of millions. But what made Bobby truly remarkable wasn’t the screaming crowds or gold records, it was the life he chose after the spotlight dimmed.

With hits like “Little Woman,” “Julie, Do Ya Love Me,” and “Easy Come, Easy Go,” Bobby gave us songs that shimmered with sweetness and sincerity. He had that rare ability to sing straight to the heart, no guile, no posturing, just honest pop magic. But instead of coasting on fame, Bobby stepped away from it, driven by a different kind of calling. He became a paramedic, a reserve police officer, and a CPR instructor, quietly devoting decades to public service with the same sincerity he once brought to the stage.

In a world that often forgets its idols, Bobby never stopped giving. Whether mentoring first responders, supporting education and music programs in Ghana through the Brigitte & Bobby Sherman Children’s Foundation, or bringing joy to fans long after his touring days were over, he remained as grounded as he was gracious.

His passing in June 2025 at the age of 81 is a poignant reminder that the brightest stars don’t always burn with the loudest flame. Sometimes, they shine in the small, steady acts of kindness. Bobby Sherman left behind a legacy of compassion, melody, and heartfelt connection. He wasn’t just a teen idol; he was a reminder that a good heart never goes out of style.

For every fan who once taped his picture to their wall, or swayed to his songs on a transistor radio, and for every person whose life he touched behind the scenes, Bobby’s memory endures like a favorite song, gentle, timeless, and still humming in our hearts.

In March 2025, Sherman's diagnosis of stage 4 kidney cancer was made public. He died at his home in Los Angeles on June 24, 2025, at the age of 81. (B)

R&B

VA - Rhythm & Western Vol. 01-10 [2022] (10 x CDs)

The Rhythm & Western series is a fascinating dive into genre fusion. The series is an exploration of the intersection between rhythm & blues and country music, showcasing how African American artists reinterpreted country classics with their own unique style. This collection, spanning ten volumes, offers a deep dive into the rich history of musical crossover, where blues, soul, and rock & roll meet the storytelling traditions of country.

One of the most compelling aspects of this series is its ability to highlight rare and lesser-known recordings that might have otherwise been overlooked. These tracks reveal the depth of artistry and innovation that went into transforming country songs into rhythm & blues masterpieces. The reinterpretations often bring a new emotional intensity, rhythmic complexity, and vocal power that distinguish them from their original versions.

Among the rarities featured in this collection, Scatman Crothers - Ghost Riders In The Sky stands out as a striking example of how an artist can take a well-known country tune and infuse it with a completely different energy. Similarly, King Curtis - Home On The Range showcases the ability of a blues and jazz musician to reinterpret a traditional song with a fresh perspective. Another standout is Charlie McCoy & Bo Chatman - Corrine Corrina, which brings a raw and authentic blues feel to a song deeply rooted in country tradition.

The series also includes Brook Benton - The Boll Weevil Song, a track that bridges the gap between folk storytelling and rhythm & blues, demonstrating how these genres share common themes and influences. Esther Phillips - Release Me is another rare gem, transforming a country ballad into a soulful, emotionally charged performance.

Overall, Rhythm & Western is a testament to the fluidity of musical genres and the creative brilliance of artists who dared to reinterpret and redefine established traditions. It serves as a reminder that music is a constantly evolving art form, shaped by cultural exchanges and artistic innovation. (B)
