Floyd Tillman - I Love You So Much it Hurts, His Recordings 1936-1962 & 1981 [2004] (6 x CDs)
Released by Bear Family Records in 2004 as catalogue number BCD 16415 FL, I Love You So Much It Hurts: His Recordings 1936-1962 & 1981 is one of the most comprehensive overviews ever devoted to Floyd Tillman. Issued as a six-CD box set with a substantial hardcover book, the collection traces his recorded legacy from his earliest appearances with the Blue Ridge Playboys in 1936 through to a late-career return to the studio in 1981. Across more than four decades of recordings, the set documents the career of a songwriter, singer and guitarist whose influence reached far beyond the boundaries of country music.
The first discs follow Tillman's development from western swing roots into one of the defining voices of Texas country music. His recordings for Decca during the 1940s reveal a distinctive blend of country, jazz and popular song influences, delivered in a relaxed vocal style that differed markedly from many of his contemporaries. As the years progress, the collection captures the emergence of songs that became central to his legacy, including They Took The Stars Out Of Heaven, Each Night At Nine, Slippin' Around, This Cold War With You, Drivin' Nails In My Coffin and the enduring title song I Love You So Much It Hurts.
One of the strengths of the box is the way it reveals the depth of Tillman's catalogue beyond the familiar standards. Alongside the major recordings are numerous overlooked sides that demonstrate his gift for conversational songwriting, emotional honesty and understated humour. Whether performing western swing, honky tonk ballads or rhythmically adventurous country songs, Tillman consistently brought a sophisticated approach that set him apart from many artists of the era.
What emerges from these six discs is the portrait of a musician who helped shape the sound of modern country music while remaining unmistakably individual. The combination of meticulous research, excellent restoration and exhaustive career coverage makes this set both an essential archival document and a rewarding listening experience. For collectors, it stands among Bear Family's finest artist retrospectives, preserving the work of one of Texas music's most influential and distinctive songwriters. (B)
