Charles Earland and Oddysey - The Great Pyramid [1976]

The Great Pyramid finds Charles Earland at a point where groove and structure are working in balance rather than competition. Released in the mid-seventies, it sits comfortably inside that period without leaning on excess. The organ sound is warm and grounded, never crowding the mix, and the band plays with a shared sense of purpose that keeps everything moving forward.

I love how measured it feels. The grooves are deep but not overstated, and the arrangements leave room for repetition to do its work. Themes are allowed to settle in, then subtly reshaped as the tracks unfold. Earland’s playing is confident and conversational, less about flash than about maintaining momentum and feel.

Each track adds weight without pushing for climax, and by the end the record feels complete rather than summed up. The Great Pyramid works best when heard straight through, letting its calm authority reveal itself over time. (B)

Through the Years gathers Abbey Lincoln across decades without trying to flatten her into a single era or mood. Issued late in her career, it functions less as a retrospective statement and more as a patient walk through changing rooms, each one still occupied. The sequencing matters because it refuses to rush toward conclusions. Early selections carry the clarity and resolve of her initial recordings, where phrasing feels sculpted and intention sits close to the surface. Nothing is overstated, even when the material is direct.

As the set moves forward, time begins to register in the grain of her voice rather than in stylistic shifts. Lincoln’s later recordings do not chase reinvention. Instead, they allow space to widen around each line. Silence becomes an active element, pauses feel chosen rather than incidental. The compilation is careful in how it places these moments, letting earlier brightness make the later restraint feel earned. What emerges is not contrast for its own sake but continuity shaped by experience.

The middle stretch is especially telling. Here, Lincoln’s interpretive instincts take precedence over arrangement or tempo. Lyrics land with a conversational weight, as if the songs are being revisited rather than performed. This is where the set quietly asserts its purpose. It is not charting influence or legacy. It is showing how an artist carries material forward, how familiarity deepens rather than dulls expression.

By the time the later tracks arrive, the voice feels unguarded and exact. There is no sense of summation, no closing argument. The compilation ends without ceremony, which suits it. Through the Years does not frame Abbey Lincoln as a figure to be looked back on. It places recordings side by side and lets the listener notice what has changed, what has stayed intact, and how time itself becomes part of the sound. (B)

Everything You Ever Need to Know About the Blues Volumes 1, 2 and 3 is less a formal anthology and more an expansive listening project that stiches together a huge range of blues voices, eras and styles, an unofficial, bootleg assembled series that functions as a raw survey of the music through its most resonant figures. Taken as a whole, the set’s three parts cast a wide net, moving from delta and country blues through Chicago and urban electric styles, and touching early rhythm-and-blues-inflected performances alongside more classic post-war blues.

What gives this unsanctioned compilation its shape is sheer breadth. Foundational figures sit alongside more familiar names, with guitarists, pianists and harmonica players often appearing in succession across the volumes, their different approaches sketching a rough but tangible history of the form. Early selections lean into raw, acoustic textures, voices close and unvarnished, rhythm driven by sand-papered beat and breath. As the series unfolds, the sound broadens into electric bands, fuller arrangements, and performances that carry the tension between tradition and evolution.

Sequencing across three volumes teases out contrasts as much as similarities, so that raw country blues might give way to horn-driven shuffles, and solo performance may sit beside band-driven numbers. Before you start listening, it’s worth setting the scene.

What you’re about to hear isn’t a genre in the neat, textbook sense. It’s a collection of moments, spread across decades, when rock music deliberately widened its frame and invited orchestral sound into the conversation. Sometimes that meant a full symphony orchestra in the studio.
